My Favorite Keycap Set.
Micro Switch, a division of Honeywell, has some of the most iconic keyboards of all time. The Symbolics "Space-Cadet" keyboard is immediately recognizable, but the Honeywell Terminal Keyboard with its Red/Grey/Black/White colorway is just as visually striking. Not only is the set gorgeous, the Hall Effect switches are often regarded as some of the finest switches ever manufactured.
Classic sets, like Dolch and Beige are both massively popular due to their ability to match just about any custom keyboard, and their low key looks that make them appropriate for professional environments. I thought it was finally time to add another set to the list with Honeywell.
I had renders done by Thesicamper, the best in the business for accurate renders, and instantly fell in love with how the set looked on Cherry profile. Unlike the original high profile Honeywell terminal keycaps, I aimed to have the set made in Cherry profile by GMK, the manufacturer behind the highest quality keycaps made today. Cherry profile is shorter, and much more modern feeling.
Picking the included caps for GMK sets is the hardest part of designing a GMK set in my opinion. Keyboard enthusiasts often have custom keyboards that use non-standard key layouts, and making sure you have coverage is essential to creating a successful set.
After the community was shown the kit renders and given a few weeks to give feedback the group buy on Originativeco.com, a community run storefront, started and lasted for three weeks. MOQ was met quite fast, and the order was placed!
In December 2017 GMK Honeywell was awarded the prestigious 'Best Keycaps' award on Deskthority. Since then, Round 2 has been produced and will be sold by Originative Co.
